Well, y'all. I've moved. It's a little sad, and I'm sort of annoyed because I found a good script (okay, I don't know if script is actually the correct word. This shit is confusing.) for importing blogger posts to tumblr, and spent a chunk of time (when I should have been studying, of course), running it, but about one-hundred of my old posts aren't on the new blog. My old posts will stay up here, but it still bothers me that not every post will be over at my new blog.

Acting is not something that I enjoy at all, but I had a dream that I got cast in a pretty big movie, with a sizable role--something like the awkward, off-kilter sister with a weird sense of humor (perfect!) and I was so excited about it. (Mostly in my dream, but also after.) The director was someone pretty well-known and was great to work with. He only filmed one take of each scene, and we were all back home pretty quickly. The trailer came out a few days later and people would recognize me when I was out. It was pretty cool.

I'm sort of fed up with blogger and I'm thinking about changing. Anyone have recommendations of different blog hosts and thoughts on whether it would be super difficult to transfer all of my old content over? It makes me sick to think about it, is all. But the interface on blogger is hideous and I don't love how my blog looks.

winter break to-do's

I'm thinking a little too much about what I want to do over winter break. (Freeedom starts as early as the fourteenth, if I can get my shit together. I have one loose deadline. Evil.) Here's what's on the list so far:

- Read Animal Farm, 1984, and Scar Tissue. And Wild Sheep Chase, if I can get my hands on a copy. (The one at the library at Emory is missing! So annoying.)

- Write two stories.

- Go for random long walks/romps again. It's been too long.

- Eat at Cafe Sunflower, R. Thomas (half-off coupons to both thanks to Scoutmob!), and World Peace Cafe.

- Think about Switzerland/Italy/cows for Spring Break.

- Spend a few hours leisure reading in a coffeeshop instead of studying! (Sounds like a dream.)

- Play too much Settlers of Catan.

Well, this is maybe embarrassing, but Kim posted a few excerpts from her old livejournal to mark her 1,000th post on her new blog, and I went and looked back at my own and read back for a while. I was thinking about sharing it, but not sure, but then I found nineteen year-old me's top-five list of animals which was:

1. cows
2. pandas
3. highland cows
4. puffins
5. hippos, maybe.

I was so very certain on that last one.

This time around, I didn't include highland cows as a separate animal, and I think it's fair to say they are cows for the purposes of generating a top five. I do like puffins, but I think I like farm animals more. Anyway, I am going to share a link to my livejournal with y'all because I have no shame. Enjoy. I was so super earnest and over-analytical. Maybe I am still those things, but I have to think that if I am, it's to a lesser extent. I'll even link y'all to a few favorite posts. Oh my goodness.

I've been reading Arnie's blogs for years now (older ones here, here, here, and here), and he's one of my absolute favorite bloggers. Seriously great. He and his wife got married a few months ago, and he just posted her vows. Absolutely perfect:

australia: beaches

Australia is very much known for its beaches, but as I stayed in the south in their winter, it was far too cold for sunbathing/swimming/etc, but I still made the trip to a couple of beaches.

Sydney's famed Bondi Beach.

Having grown up so close, it's always nice to see the ocean when I travel.

St. Kilda beach, in the south of Melbourne, had a cute little lighthouse. It also had the added benefit of being near a field where I got to watch an intense game of Aussie Rules Football played by gorgeous Australian men. Drool.

Luna Park, a cute amusement park, is located right near St. Kila beach. They had a ride like this (the Phoenix) at Busch Gardens in Tampa. It terrifies me.

Okay, I'm starting my top-five lists. First, animals. I'm leaving dogs out, because I decided to. It's so nice to be able to do what I want.

1. Cows. Because, duh.

2. Panda bears. I only recently--like maybe the last three to four years, got really into panda bears, but they're super cute and I can draw them.

3. Pigs. I really like farm animals in general. See, e.g., cows, goats.

4. Goats.

5. Chipmunks. New to me, because we didn't have them in Florida, but I think they are quelle cutie pies.

I scrambled into my boots and headphones and met the TSA agent at the screening area. He fished through my bag and pulled out a quart of quinoa my mom had asked me to bring home.

TSA guy: What's this?
Me: Quinoa.
TSA guy: blank stare
Me: It's a grain. There's no gluten in it.
TSA guy: I don't know it.
Me: Sort of like cous cous.
TSA guy: Cous cous? Is that sort of like rice?
Me: Yeah. My mom wanted me to bring it for her.
TSA guy: Alright, you can have it.

I wanted to do a few very belated posts on my trip to Australia. I've divided them by subject rather than location. Here's some photos of bookstores I visited in Australia:

A bookstore in Katoomba had a whole wall of Penguins. I loved the shades of orange together.

I ducked into the bathroom of a cute bookstore/cafe (my dream!) in Bondi Beach. The walls were papered with pages from Alice in Wonderland. I thought it was lovely.

Ampersand Cafe & Bookstore is a super lovely bookstore/cafe in the Paddington neighborhood of Sydney. You eat at mismatched vintage tables surrounded by books!

Paddington had three great bookstores. Berkelouw had an amazing selection of used books. (I picked up Dance Dance Dance by Murakami here, and I was delighted!) I was really impressed throughout Australia at how much Nadine Gordimer and V.S. Naipaul bookstores carry--two authors that I love and find to be under-appreciated in the states.

This bookstore in Newtown was insane. There were books everywhere, and not much of an eye toward organization. Good for photos, I thought, but the idea of trying to search for a book here made my brain hurt.

I finally went through the photos I took in DC when I was there last month. I have vague designs of posting some here (and some from Australia. ha), but I'm sort of in love with this shot so I thought I'd share it now in case I don't get to the rest. I am officially the worst blogger ever.

So last week American Apparel sent a 20% off offer to their mailing list. There are a few things I want (tights, a jersey pocket skirt, maybe a pair of thigh-high socks). So I went in ready to buy, but I found I couldn't do it. Even at 20% their prices are sort of ridiculous for what their products are.

Everyone knows the company is having major financial troubles. And I think it's because even people who like their stuff find it way, way overpriced. Plus, everyone hates Dov Charney and doesn't really want to support him. (Trust me, I'm conflicted, too.)

Today, the Groupon deal is half-off at American Apparel. Twenty-five bucks gets you fifty to use in store. I'm calculating out if I even find that worth it. I probably do. But I'm also going to go ahead and put my money on American Apparel folding sooner rather than later.

Gawker is probably the best source for updates about American Apparel's finances, etc. They hate Dov Charney something fierce. I sort of wonder if Gawker employees are prohibited from wearing American Apparel clothing, but then they sort of fit the bill. I imagine folks walking in in deep v's in all sorts of lovely hues, saying, no, this summer shirt, semi-sheer, deep v neck? Nope, not from American Apparel.

I have a little bit of weirdness about my college experience, as far as the social aspect goes. I didn't have a ton of friends in college and have kept in touch with virtually--maybe actually--no one from college. I honestly feel mostly okay about that. I always felt the same way about camp, too. There were kids who lived for summer camp. I had an okay time, but by the end of the month, I was ready to get home and back to my routine. And during the school year, I didn't constantly (or, probably, ever) think about camp and how much I missed it. I didn't go to visit camp friends and I only really kept in touch with a few.

This may be embarrassing to admit, but whatever. Today I started looking at facebook profiles of some of the kids from college I never really think about--those with whom I'm not even friends (facebook or otherwise). A lot of their pictures still included college friends, and it seemed like a lot of their existence was still geared toward where they went to college and the identity they formed there. I know that's not exclusive to New College--I have friends here who talk more than a bit about their own colleges and their friends from college. But it seems like New College had a sort of summer camp aspect to it, where people that go there get absorbed into a little world that they prefer more than maybe any other. I wonder if part of it is the homogenous natures of both the summer camp and the college that I attended; I went to a Jewish summer camp and New College was overwhelmingly made up of upper middle class hipsters who mainly subscribed to the same interests and political, etc. beliefs. Maybe both were a way to escape the broader world and live in an environment that only contained the things one preferred. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't really know.

But I think I'm honestly glad that--even though I felt a major sense of not fitting in at both--I'm able to continue to be me, in the present, and not long for these things that were part of my past. I have a new group of friends who I adore and I feel more a part of something than I have in the past. Perhaps I'll idealize my time at Emory and maybe I'm being unfair by classifying my alma mater in the way that I am. But though I'm glad I went where I did, I see it as an imperfect place and I wonder if it's unwise for people to continue to let it shape them even after they've graduated and (in some cases, as a lot of people continue to hang around) moved on.

DC is fabbityfab, y'all. Some of my faves:

- Capitol Hill Books, a super cramped and slightly-disorganized bookshop that's still totally charming. (But no Murakami to be found! Why, oh why?)

- Little Devils at Sticky Fingers Bakery. Oh my goodness. So tasty. A TSA employee opened up the bag holding it and I was about to get a little rowdy before she replaced my precious, which I promptly ate at the gate.

- A million, billion apple samples (especially Honeycrisp!) at Eastern Market and the weekend market in Dupont Circle. Yum.

- Boy watching on the Metro/boys on bikes, everywheeere. DC boys definitely have it going on, y'all.

- A sweet compliment on my outfit! Oh my goodness! I dress like I'm smoking crack so I was pretty pleased. That kind of shit makes my day.

- A gardein (chik'n) burrito at Chipotle. Another level.

- Finally meeting darling Sophia, a super super cute pup! I'm estimating maybe three more years before I'm grown up/responsible enough to take care of a dog in addition to taking care of myself.

I'm DC-bound, tomorrow afternoon! Quelle exciting. I have to spend a couple of days staying out in the 'burbs for a career fair, but I think I'll get to head into DC-proper in the afternoons and evenings, and then I'm spending a couple of days exploring before I head home. Things I hope to do:

- Railfan a little bit. Yes, I'm a nerd.

- Duck into used bookshops, to explore and hopefully, hopefully find a copy of the Wild Sheep Chase.

- Explore fun neighborhoods.

- Be a tourist for a bit--I'm time limited, so I don't know if I'll spend long in the museums but I'd like to stroll the mall and see the White House/wave to Obama/maybe see Bo?!

I heard an interview with you about your It Gets Better campaign. I was saddened and frustrated with your comments regarding people of faith and their perpetuation of bullying. As someone who loves the Lord and does not support gay marriage, I can honestly say I was heartbroken to hear about the young man who took his own life.

If your message is that we should not judge people based on their sexual preference, how do you justify judging entire groups of people for any other reason (including their faith)? There is no part of me that took any pleasure in what happened to that young man.

To that end, to imply that I would somehow encourage my children to mock, hurt, or intimidate another person for any reason is completely unfounded and offensive. Being a follower of Christ is, above all things, a recognition that we are all imperfect, fallible, and in desperate need of a savior. We cannot believe that we are better or more worthy than other people.

Please consider your viewpoint, and please be more careful with your words in the future.

A question: Do you "support" atheist marriage? Interfaith marriage? Divorce and remarriage? All are legal, all go against Christian and/or traditional ideas about marriage, and yet there's no "Christian" movement to deny marriage rights to atheists or people marrying outside their respective faiths or people divorcing and remarrying. Why the hell not?

Sorry, L.R., but so long as you support the denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples, it's clear that you do believe that some people—straight people—are "better or more worthy" than others.

And—sorry—but you are partly responsible for the bullying and physical violence being visited on vulnerable LGBT children. The kids of people who see gay people as sinful or damaged or disordered and unworthy of full civil equality—even if those people strive to express their bigotry in the politest possible way (at least when they happen to be addressing a gay person)—learn to see gay people as sinful, damaged, disordered, and unworthy. And while there may not be any gay adults or couples where you live, or at your church, or in your workplace, I promise you that there are gay and lesbian children in your schools. And while you can only attack gays and lesbians at the ballot box, nice and impersonally, your children have the option of attacking actual gays and lesbians, in person, in real time.

Real gay and lesbian children. Not political abstractions, not "sinners." Gay and lesbian children.

Try to keep up: The dehumanizing bigotries that fall from the lips of "faithful Christians," and the lies about us that vomit out from the pulpits of churches that "faithful Christians" drag their kids to on Sundays, give your children license to verbally abuse, humiliate, and condemn the gay children they encounter at school. And many of your children—having listened to Mom and Dad talk about how gay marriage is a threat to family and how gay sex makes their magic sky friend Jesus cry—feel justified in physically abusing the LGBT children they encounter in their schools. You don't have to explicitly "encourage [your] children to mock, hurt, or intimidate" queer kids. Your encouragement—along with your hatred and fear—is implicit. It's here, it's clear, and we're seeing the fruits of it: dead children.

Oh, and those same dehumanizing bigotries that fill your straight children with hate? They fill your gay children with suicidal despair. And you have the nerve to ask me to be more careful with my words?

Did that hurt to hear? Good. But it couldn't have hurt nearly as much as what was said and done to Asher Brown and Justin Aaberg and Billy Lucas and Cody Barker and Seth Walsh—day in, day out for years—at schools filled with bigoted little monsters created not in the image of a loving God, but in the image of the hateful and false "followers of Christ" they call Mom and Dad.

Me and my sweet dog, Patrick. It's his sixteenth birthday today! I can't believe I got something in the second part of my childhood (I basically split up the first eighteen years of my life into two halves--years one through eight, in which I lived in Charleston, and eight through eighteen, in which I lived in Tampa) that is now sixteen. My parents took me to the FAO Schwarz at Westshore Mall and let me pick him out on October 14, 1994. That was the first thing I remembered when I woke up this morning and I gave him a quick hug and then got up to finish reading before class. xo Patrick!
